Switzerland-based Zünd is the leading manufacturer of digital cutting systems and one of the sponsors of Packaging Experience Summit 2019. We sat down with Director of Marketing & Communications Beatrice Drury to learn about Zünd’s important role in digital printing and finishing.
We’re incredibly grateful for the valuable partnerships of our 2019 event sponsors, including Zünd — a leading manufacturer of digital cutting systems, developed and produced in Switzerland. As a second-generation, family-owned business, Zünd is committed to maintaining the highest level of excellence and innovation with their products and services.
In anticipation of Packaging Experience Summit, we sat down with Director of Marketing & Communications Beatrice Drury to learn about Zünd’s important role in digital printing and finishing.
What is Zünd’s mission and how does the company's products and services support brands?
With decades of experience in digital cutting for very diverse industries and applications, Zünd is well aware of the requirements and challenges specific to our customers in the packaging industry. In no small part, this is due to the invaluable partnerships we have developed in this market with dynamic, innovative companies such as The BoxMaker, our U.S. beta site for the BHS150, Zünd’s fully-automated industrial Board Handling System.
What are the benefits of digital finishing for packaging and display?
Order quantities continue to decrease while the need for customization and personalization is growing steadily. In packaging, too, there is a noticeable trend for ordering on demand instead of keeping inventory. This is where the benefits of a digital cutting system capable of handling anything from sample-making to high-volume production really come into play.
Because of their open interface, Zünd equipment can be easily integrated into any new or existing digital workflow. Unlike traditional die-cutting equipment, with digital finishing there is no need for building, maintaining, or storing dies and any changes in the cut file can be made on the fly.
What emerging challenges does Zünd see in the packaging marketplace and how is the company adapting to meet these needs?
We are seeing tremendous growth in digital print for packaging — an area where digital cutting is a logical solution. Because of the ever-growing pressure to produce “more, faster, cheaper,” digital cutting is also gaining greater acceptance in industrial applications.
Zünd meets these changing demands with modular automation solutions, such as our fully automated Board Handling System BHS150 as well as with tools and automated tool changers especially for protective foam applications. These systems allow manufacturers to quickly adapt to the strong demand for maximum transparency and flexibility in the production workflow.
We have also seen a trend in packaging for increased process automation and cutting solutions that can handle not just one type of material but a wide range. Here, too, Zünd excels in being able to provide systems that are truly multifunctional — in other words,"one cutter for any material.”
